    occured on St Bartholomew's day, thus Calvinists chose Bartholomew as a popular name

  • 13 May 1607: Jamestown VA
    Virginia's first settlement occurred at Jamestown Island on May 13 1607 when the Susan Constant, Goodspeed, and Discovery arrived. the *first* settlement, of course ignores the Indians who were already here. The first emigration from Virginia occurred on June 22 1607 when Captain Christopher Newport sailed for home

  • 1714: First colony of Germans at Spotsylvania VA
    planted by Governor Alexander Spotswood at Germanna in what is now Spotsylvania County. 10 years later they moved to an area now in Fauquier County

  • 1725—1730: Immigration from PA into Shenandoah Valley
1739 
  • 1739: War of Jenkins Ear
    Spanish pirates boarded and plundered the British ship Rebecca off Jamaica. Adding insult to injury, they cut off the ear of Rebecca's captain, Robert Jenkins. Back home in England, Jenkins got little sympathy until some years later when some British officials became concerned about growing strength of the Spanish in the Caribbbean. In 1739 they asked Jenkins to describe the atrocity to a committee of the House of Commons and his display of the severed ear raised patriotic spirit to the point that war was declared against Spain
